Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel oval device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue background nebuly of four at the top, on which is a silver parachute, with three areas between the shroud lines red, the parachute surmounted in base by a wavy horizontal silver scroll extending over the sinister edge of the oval, the scroll inscribed "SUBSIDIUM," and a silver arched scroll forming the base of the oval inscribed "SINE QUA NON" all in blue letters.

Symbolism
The nebuly, an heraldic symbol for clouds, refers to the sky with its unlimited range.  The parachute alludes to the airborne support mission of the organization.  The red background is indicative of danger and courage.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 17 February 1969.

Azure, two bars nebuly Argent overall on a pale Gules two parachutes of the second.

Crest

From a wreath Argent and Azure a mill rind Gules superimposed by four pieces of bamboo fretted crosswise Or.

Motto

SUBSIDIUM - SINE QUAL NON (Support - Without Which There Is Nothing).

Symbolism

Shield

The red vertical band symbolizes a drop zone and together with the parachutes alludes to the airborne support mission of the organization.  The red further stands for danger and courage.  The nebuly, an heraldic symbol for clouds, refers to the sky with its unlimited range and to the spirit of "anywhere anytime."  Furthermore, the "eight" segments of the nebuly with the "two" parachutes allude to "82d" the present designation of the Battalion.

Crest

The mill rind represents Support.  The fretted bamboo symbolizes the award of the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry for service during 1968-1969.  Scarlet and gold together recall the two Meritorious Unit Commendations awarded the unit.  Scarlet denotes courage, gold excellence.

Background
The coat of arms was approved on 19 December 1968.  It was amended to include a crest on 8 May 1997.
